Today on the blog we are so excited to introduce Tatiana Pile, an editor at Glossy who recently wrote an article on Lauryn’s morning & evening body care routines.

And like, get ready, cause Tatiana is in the beauty biz and here to share her top drugstore finds, the products she’d take to a desert island, & her non-negotiable wellness practice.

If you have yet to meet Tatiana she is the managing editor at Glossy, highly creative, a total foodie currently living in Mexico City. With that, let’s welcome Tatiana to the blog.

Introduce yourself to The Skinny Confidential audience.

Tatiana Pile: Hello, everyone! My name is Tatiana, and I am an editor at Glossy and a beauty enthusiast. Although I am originally based in Brooklyn, NY, I went to Mexico City in January and haven’t been back to New York since.

Exploring a new city has been an incredible experience, and I almost don’t want to go back NY. When I’m not exploring, however, you can usually find me aimlessly scrolling through TikTok, researching the newest beauty trends and products that are gaining popularity. And when I’m not doing that, I’m usually trying new restaurants and posting them on either my TikTok or my Instagram, @ifihadaman.

What is the most unsuspecting beauty hack you’ve learned over the years?

TP: Working in beauty, you’re constantly learning about the unsuspecting hacks each and every day. One that resonated with me is that you really don’t need to use a million products to have great skin or hair!

The beauty of beauty is that is so specific to you and what works for me, may not necessarily work for someone else. I always tell people to start simple, and see what core products work for you. From there, feel free to add in a treatment, mask or two but keep in mind, your core routine can be as simple as you want, and it’ll still be effective.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s the one beauty item you’d bring?

TP: This one is a no-brainer, the one beauty item I would have to bring is a tinted moisturizer with SPF! I can’t be stuck on a deserted island without sun protection that also gives me a glow. That way, whenever I’m eventually rescued, my skin will look flawless and then maybe I’d become a brand ambassador for the product! Lol.

Can you give us your ride or die product for skin, body, hair?

TP: I’ve had dry skin and ezcema my entire life so for my body, I swear by Amlactin. My dermatologist recommended it me a few years ago, and it’s drastically helped even out my skin whlie also keeping it hydrated and moisturized. I normally use the Amlactin with a mix of body butters from my current fave body care brand, Hanahana Beauty. The two products together always leave my skin feeling silky smooth and smelling like a bowl of fresh fruit.

As far as skin care is concerned, I have so many products that I consider my ROD but none would be effective without starting with a good facial cleanser. For that, I absolutely love BeautyStat’s Universal Microbiome Barrier Balancing Cleanser. It has all of the key ingredients to leave your skin feeling clean + fresh without stripping away the good stuff.

I recently did a big chop and dyed my hair to decrease the amount of time I have to spend on hair maintenance. With that being said, my curls would not be as defined and popping as they are without Uncle Funky’s Curl Stimulator. It is the best curling gel I’ve ever used.

What is the #1 product someone can find at their local drugstore?

TP: Honestly, I tell everyone not to sleep on drugstore beauty! So many luxe and mass brands are secretly the same quality just at different price points. The one drugstore product I will forever recommend, I actually have two, would be NYX lip gloss and eyebrow pencils/lip liners. It’s truly a cult-classic at an extremely affordable price point.

If someone is just getting into skincare and feeling overwhelmed, what are 3 items they should start with?

TP: Narrowing it down to just 3 items is tough, but here are my suggestions:

For those just starting out, one of the most important things to focus on is actually cleaning your face. A clean face is the foundation on which you will build your serums, moisturizers, etc. Once you have a cleanser that doesn’t feel like it’s stripping or drying your face, then you’re on the right path. Right now, I’m using Tula’s Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser, and I love it.

The second product I would suggest is a good moisturizer. A lot of people will suggest serums, acids, etc. that restore the skin barrier but without a product that is specifically targeted to hydrating and mositurizing your skin, it can’t seal in the effectiveness of the targeted skincare treatments.

Lastly, I will shout this from the mountaintops until I’m blue in the face, but you NEED SPF all year ‘round!! Seriously, never skip that step! SPF is incredibly important. As a darker skin Black woman, I really love Black Girl sunscreen because it doesn’t leave the icky white cast and it’s moisturizing. I also really like Trader Joe’s Goop dupe. It’s great as a primer for when I want to wear makeup.

What’s the most effective beauty tool out right now?

TP: Honestly, there are so many beauty tools out there for so many different areas of concern, which makes it extremely hard to pick just one! My favorite beauty tool right now, though I’m not sure it’s technically considered a beauty tool rather a body care tool, is the dry brush. I’m really into making sure my skin not only looks good but feels good so I’ve been dry brushing a ton as of late.

Outside of dry brushing being a great exfoliating tool, there are also a few health benefits that make it an ideal item to have in your beauty toolkit. The act of dry brushing also acts as a detoxifier for your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage.

Tell us about the weirdest thing you’ve ever heard in an interview.

TP: Funny enough, the “weirdest” thing I’ve heard recently is Lauryn telling me she tapes her mouth shut at night. When she first shared that with me, I was so fascinated because I had never heard of anyone doing it before, but after hearing why she does it and doing my own research, I’m kind of interested in testing it out as well.

Are there any wellness trends you’re loving right now?

TP: I recently did my first-ever cold plunge, and it literally and figuratively shook me to my core. I was terrified going into the experience because who plunges their body into cold water for fun?! But it turned out to be such an interesting + empowering moment. I felt like my body was zapped with new life and energy. I’m almost positive I’m going to continue to keep doing them at least once a month – it was amazing.

What’s a book, podcast or resource you recommend?

TP: I’m challenging myself to read + support at least one Black author a month this year. Unfortunately, Black authors in the literary space rarely receive as much funding and opportunities, so I want to do my part by financially supporting and spreading the word about as many incredible writers as I can. For June, I actually just finished a book by Tia Williams appropriately titled Seven Days in June. It is an incredible read, and I highly recommend it for anyone who’s into messy love stories.

Where can everyone find you? Pimp yourself out!
