Netflix’s Glamorous Hair and Makeup Secrets

Between shaving your legs in preparation for summer beach trips and updating your sunscreen wardrobe over the weekend, you might’ve had time to watch Netflix’s latest series that feels particularly well-suited for beauty lovers. “Glamorous” follows the adventures of beauty influencer Marco Mejia (played by Miss Benny), who lands a dream job working for makeup entrepreneur Madolyn Addison (Kim Cattrall). What follows is a journey of self-discovery that leads to romance, hilarity, and of course, plenty of hair and makeup moments.

Nathan Rival and Rose-Mary Holosko were the respective leads for the hair and makeup departments, and the duo tells POPSUGAR that the beauty moments from the show were well-planned and thought out from the very beginning. With Marco’s hair, for example, “We started with a bob that we could play with and make a bit more feminine, but also make it a little bit more masculine,” Rival says. “We had to have a starting point in the journey of going all the way to the last [episode] where everyone just looks so glamorous.” As for Holosko, inspiration for came from her background as an artist. “Whether it be tear sheets from Vogue or something from nature, the show pushed the limits when it came to the makeup, the glitter, and the glam,” she says.

Both Rival and Holosko gave us behind-the-scenes looks at how the hair and makeup came together for the show, so if you’re as obsessed with all things “Glamorous” as we are, read ahead for everything you need to know about the new show.

Trends That Influenced the Hair and Makeup in “Glamorous”

“It was all free game,” Holosko says. “We saw a lot of rainbow eyeliners in the trends and everything from bio-degradable glitter to heart stamps for the face, even face painting to express oneself — nothing was out of bounds.”

For hair, Marco started out with the buzziest haircut of the moment, but was meant to grow with the character. “Since we started with the bob, we had somewhere for [the hair] to grow, you know, as the show progressed,” Rival says. “It gave us a direction and somewhere to go . . . there was eventually more length to play with so the character could also be more bold and adventurous.”

Another part of Marco’s hair journey you may have missed was his curl evolution. His hair went from sleek and straight to curly and as Rival would say: much more flamboyant. “A lot of moose was used as well as curling wands, rollers, and small extensions for the Nicole Kidman look,” he says. The hero product? The Evo Macgyver Multi-Use Mousse ($34). “I’m a big fan of that product,” Rival says.

How RuPaul’s Drag Race Inspired the Beauty Moments in “Glamorous”

There were a few scenes in the show that feature drag queens and, of course, inspiration for their glam came from none other than the beloved show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

“Being a fan of [the show], we just had lots of images of all the girls [on set],” Rival says. “Sometimes we’d find we didn’t have a certain wig color or length, so the wigs that we used ended up being just a mashup of looks. I’d have enough time to do the front of it, and then I might say to one of my colleagues, do the back this way. So it was a bit of a Frankenstein of fabulous big hair.”

As for the drag makeup, Holosko says that it was a collaborative effort through and through — some of the actors even did their own makeup. “We set up a station for the drag queens and it was amazing to see them evolve and embody a look and a brand that they have created and worked so hard to achieve,” she says. “We were really just there facilitating an easy transition onto film and it indeed was seamless because they’re used to being on a stage.”

The Standout Products Used on the Set of “Glamorous”

One of the can’t-miss portions of Marco’s character: their lips, and that youthful pout was crafted to stand out. “We used Benefit’s Benetint ($33) on the lips,” Holosko says. “Then, we topped it off with Cle De Peau’s Lip Glorifier ($47),” she says. “We wanted to capture that cherry lip and the accompanying cheeks and this combination was perfect.”

Still, the most important part of the beauty scenes of the show had to be the actors’s skin-care routines. “Our actors were skin-care addicts,” Holosko says. “Whether it was their Sheseido under-eye patches ($70) or them doing their full skin regimens, it all came together to create this glow that was undeniable on camera.”
